My wife wants to border our 8x8 garden with 8 foot railroad ties. Can you suggest anything more appropriate?

Railroad ties aren't really suitable for a landscape. While they will last practically forever, they have been treated with creosote which will leach into the soil and become sticky to the touch in the summertime. There are lots of landscape timbers you can use instead. Pressure treated lumber can be used in ornamental beds, or redwood, cedar or cypress lumber has built-in rot resistance. There are also plastic timbers and concrete landscape bricks that will last practically forever and maintain a clean, attractive look. Hope you jettison the idea of railroad ties!
