I live in zone 9, in Lakeland, FL. I have 8, 5 yr old plants. We had a very cold winter of 20 degrees, and there are alot of brown branches. Do I cut off the brown branches or should the plant be cut low to the ground, to start over. There is green in the base, also last season I noticed some white spots of the leaves. (mealy bugs?) if so, how do I treat this problem.

You can cut your bird of paradise down 6-12 inches from the ground. If you do this you'll probably prune out any diseased or insect infested plant parts so no treatment of the spots will be necessary. Hope your plant rebounds quickly!
