A day or two ago, I noticed that the leaves were growing really well on my rose bushes. But, today it looks like something ate them and some of the small branches. Is it an animal or a bug or pest that did it, and how can this be prevented in the future.

Insects typically feed on the leaves but not the stems of roses so you may be dealing with a 4 legged critter rather than a flying or crawling insect. Thoroughly inspect your plant including the undersides of the leaves for clues. If you find no caterpillars or beetles, I suspect the culprit is a critter. You may have to cage your plants until you determine just what might be feeding on the leaves or stems.
