Although you've cut the ficus down, the roots will have lots of stored energy and you'll see suckers emerge from the roots. The only way to kill the roots off is to cut the suckers down as they appear and then immediately paint the stubs with Round Up or Brush B Gon. These products will be transported back to the roots and will kill them, at least partially. Repeat applications will need to be made and you'll have to be persistent in cutting down any suckers as soon as they appear. As long as you do, the roots will eventually run out of stored energy and will die off. Wish there were an easier way, but unless you have the roots dug and removed, it's about the only way to kill them off.
