If you can't find vermiculite, you might try using perlite. Most garden stores do not carry such large bags of vermiculite because the product is normally used as a component of soilless mixes for potted plants rather than as a soil amendment in an outdoor garden. The problem you may encounter if you use it outdoors is that it can float to the surface during heavy rainstorms. If your goal is to amend clay soil, good old compost, peat moss, or aged manure can do the job. Plus, as these materials break down they will provide nutrients to the roots of your plants. Best wishes with your garden!
