|correct way to over seed a lawn to fill in areas that that are getting thin

|I'd rake the thinning or bare areas just to roughen up the soil a little so the new seeds can make good contact with the earth so they'll root quickly. After broadcasting the seeds water the lawn well to move the seeds down through the grass blades and onto the soil surface. Keep the lawn well waterd so the seeds sprout quickly. You should see the lawn green up in 7-10 days. Best wishes with your lawn.
