I bought this very young tree yesterday but noticed it doesn't have any

Dogwoods are dormant in the winter months but usually begin to green up in March or April, depending upon the weather. Try scraping the bark with your fingernail. If you see green tissue beneath the bark, that part of the tree is still alive. If the tissue is brown, that part is dead. I hope you see green tissue!
