What type of spray or poduct i need to spray my corn with in my garden when it start getting ear to keep bugs, bettles. off ears |
Corn earworm is probably the worst pest of corn and it's fairly simple to keep them (and earwigs) from entering the newly developing ears. Timing is everything, though. In order to develop kernals, the silks must receive pollen from the tassels. You'll see the pollen being released from the tassels and once the silk begins to dry, that signals that the kernals are beginning to develop. At that time you can place a drop of mineral oil on the silks just where they emerge from the husk. The mineral oil will keep insect eggs from hatching and larvae from entering the husk. Another option is placing a clothes pin at the point where silk enters the ear helps keep worms out of ears. This should be done soon after the first silk emerges. Best wishes with your corn! |
