There are several species of hydrangea that grow exceptionally well in the Bay Area including the lacecaps, mopheads, climbing and oak leaf hydrangea. All need full sunshine and all, except perhaps the climbing hydrangea, will adapt to growing in containers. Bird of Paradise also grows reasonably well in your gardening region, and in ground is better than growing them in containers. They have especially large root systems and thrive when they ample root room.
