Gardenia leaf tips can turn black when the plant develops a fungal infection but if you're finding a black coating on the upper parts of the leaves that can be easily scraped off with your fingernail, you're dealing with sooty mold. When insects such as aphids, scales or mealybugs feed on the juices within the plant tissues they excrete a substance called honeydew. This eventually turns black and makes the plant look unattractive. To control the insects use a neem oil based insecticide or Insecticidal soap. Once you control the insect pests, the sooty mold will weather away.
