Living in Statesville,NC area, is it too late to cut back my butterfly bushes...they have new leaf growth from top to bottom, as I never cut them back after last summer's bloom.

Now that it is leafing out, severe pruning can really stress it out. If you can wait until after it has flowered, pruning will be less of a shock to your plant. You can shorten the stems after it has bloomed and then, if it is really overgrown, cut it down to just above ground level late next winter or early spring. It will resprout from the ground and be renewed. Best wishes with your butterfly bush.
