A Southern Magnolia is a large tree, reaching 60-90' in height with an equal spread. They are shallow rooted and the roots usually travel out as far as the tips of the branches. Unless you have a really large yard, it may not be a good choice. However, there's a smaller version called Little Gem Southern Magnolia. This tree grows only about 35' tall with an 8-10' spread. If you choose to go with this one, you can plant it 10' from the pool and the fence.
