i want to build a raised bed around an exisiting pine tree, do i have to keep the soil off the tree or can i just fill around it

If soil is piled up against the bark of your pine it can hold too much moisture and can cause the bark to rot. I'd keep the soil away from the trunk. You can line the trunk area with rocks or gravel to facilitate good drainage. Best wishes with your project.
