We are novices. We planted 56 tulip bulbs(in Nov.)in front - only 17 came up. 20 in the back, only 7 came up. Back ones weaker looking, shorter, flowers smaller & duller. Could the bulbs have been bad? Deer are around but no evidence of any - especially in front. We new housing develop. in deer land. But no evidence of them digging. What do you think?Should we dig up later and rplt in fall

About the only reason for such a poor display is that you planted the tulips too deeply. I'd dig them up and replant them this fall. Set the bulbs only twice as deep as they are wide. Best wishes with your tulips!
