|Shade contributes to moss growth but poor drainage and compacted, acidic soils also do their part. You can help loosen the soil so it drains faster and you can change the soil's pH by amending the bed with compost or other organic matter. Spread 3-4 inches of compost over the top between your plants and dig it into the soil. As the compost decomposes it will provide nutrients to the roots of your plants. The newly loosened soil will drain faster and mold won't be so apt to grow in the area.
