Hi, Last fall I took my cannas in the house in buckets. They were in the basement all winter and later started to sprout. Some of the leaves got big and the stems were about 2 feet tall. However, they were drooping in the basement. I just put them outside. Should I cut off the untidy leaves and sprouts and wait for new ones? Will it be OK after sprouting and getting leaves in the basement? Thanks for all your help!! Dorian |
Sounds like your basement was too warm and the cannas thought that spring had arrived. Now that they are outdoors they should perk up. I wouldn't prune them back. You can stake them up if the stems are floppy and later in the season you'll get healthy new growth. At that time you can prune off the old stems and foliage. Next year, store them in a cooler spot but one that remains above freezing. Best wishes with your cannas! |
