The fall months are an excellent time to transplant shrubs. The cooler daytime temperatures and natural rainfall will reduce transplanting stress, and the roots will grow a bit before winter weather arrives. Dig the hole larger than you think the plant will need, then return some of the soil to the hole. Plant at the same level the shrubs were growing before, tamp the soil down gently to remove any air spaces around the roots, then water well. Your plants will be ready to grow in the springtime.
