|It sounds like winter injury - often called frost crack. It is a result of temperature fluctuations during the winter which causes expansion and contraction of a tree?s trunk. Frost cracks are not serious as long as they are kept clean to prevent disease and insects from entering the wound. There's nothing you can or should do. Your tree will close the wound by itself and eventually callous over the damage.
