|The general advice is to overseed, then wait until after you've mowed the new lawn 2-3 times before applying fertilizer. This waiting period is necessary for the new grass to establish a healthy root system. If the grass is too young it won't be able to tolerate a fertilizer application. You may have to overseed again a little later in the spring.
