How much sun/shade should I give an herbaceous peony in downtown Sonoma? We get some summer a.m. fog, but mostly very warm to hot days. Our lows in winter are usually in the high 20's and low 30's.

Full sunshine will produce the healthiest peonies with the most flowers. Amend the soil with organic matter to make sure it drains well, then plant your peony. Deadhead the spent flowers throughout the summer to encourage more flowers and at the end of the season, after frost blackens the tops of the plants, cut everything down to soil level. In the spring new stems and foliage will appear. Best wishes with your new peony.
