You can prune your empress tree after it has finished flowering (late spring or early summer), removing any dead, diseased, crossed or rubbing branches and then prune to shape. These are vigorously growing trees and pruning will not harm them. In fact, pruning is not necessary, but if it is lopsided or the branches are not well spaced, you can remove or shorten them without problem.
