|Your garden bed should be at least 12" deep for most vegetables to provide adequate root room - 18 inches deep is better. The problem with something only 8 inches deep is that the soil will heat up during the summer, especially when sitting on concrete in the summer sunshine. I'd go deeper to keep the soil cooler and to provide enough room for the roots to grow without begin overcrowded.
