Rhododendrons are ornamental, acidic-soil loving broad-leaf evergreens. They grow best in partial shade and prefers to be planted on the North or East side as a South/Soutwest exposure increases the chance of winter injury. They love to be planted with pre-moistened peat moss mixed into the soil. Well-drained soil is a must! Rhododendron 'Purple Gem' has bright violet (purplish blue) flowers in late April. Aromatic foliage is an olive green, new growth is grayish blue, on a dense round and tight growing dwarf bush. It usually grows about 24 inches tall and wide.
