My shrub is about 5 yrs old. We trimmed it l/2 during the fall but this year is has some green but mostly dry branches where we cut. What can I do now that it is spring.

Scrape the bark tissue on a couple of the stems. If the tissue beneath is still green, that means there is life! If it is not green, that part of the stem is dead. You can safely the stems and branches back to live tissue, even if that means cutting the entire shrub to just above soil level. As long as the roots are healthy they will develop healthy new sprouts later this spring. Good luck with your potentilla.
