I have an older lilac bush, the bottoms are bare, how far back can I prune? It's getting almost too tall for its spot.

The general rule of thumb is to prune lilacs back by about one third in a single pruning session. If yours needs to be reduced by more than that, plan on pruning it back again next spring after it has finished flowering.
