If you are looking for an evergreen hedge, arborvitae (Thuja) or upright junipers might be suitable. They are both very cold hardy and tough plants. The juniper requires excellent drainage and full sun while the arborvitae will tolerate a slightly moister spot and a bit of shade (but not full shade).

The number of plants and appropriate spacing would be determined by the particular variety you select. Your selection would be based on soil type, amount of sunlight, and the ultimate size (height as well as width) hedge you require. Your local nursery should be able to help you figure out the best selection for your situation.

Your County Extension (tel. 652-3370) can help you with the soil tests and interpreting the results and may also have some useful suggestions for hedge plants in your local area.

Since evergreens of any immediate size can be quite expensive, you might also wish to consider a fence or perhaps a fence covered with a vine. This would give you the quickest privacy screen of all.
