Malathion is a non-systemic, wide spectrum insecticide. While it is listed as safe to use on ornamental plants, flowers and vegetables, it is moderately toxic to birds and highly toxic to honey bees. For that reason I would caution you against using it when plants are in flower. Or apply the product in the early evening after the bees have left the garden. Then if the bees return in the morning, they won't be so apt to encounter the fresh spray.
