I use several thicknesses of newspaper or cardboard and cover over it with 2-3 inches of compost. This combination will block sunlight so weed seeds won't germinate and you can dig or rototill everything into the soil at the end of the growing season to help enrich the soil. Best wishes with your veggie garden!
