What is purple Pirella or perilla? I was told that it is a substitute for basil.

Perilla frutescens is commonly called purple perilla and it looks similar enough that it can be confused with purple basil. Purple perilla is grown for its attractive, aromatic, edible leaves. You can use the leaves just as you would basil leaves.
