Arborvitaes are tolerant of many types of soils, as long as they are well draining. Soils that remain soggy for extended periods of time can cause root rot. If your soil doesn't drain quickly you can amend the entire planting bed with compost or other organic matter to loosen it and help it drain faster. Don't just amend the planting hole - work the compost into the soil in a large area prior to planting and your shrubs should be happy.
