I moved here 3 years ago. Every shrub or bush I plant grows & then the next year that growth dies & the growth starts over from the bottom. Each plant eventually dies. What would cause this? Where I used to live I grew beautiful flowering shrubs and bushes with no problem. Can you give me some ideas as to why this would happen and what to do about it? My lastest victim is my lilac bush!

If plants are dying down to soil level but the roots generate new shoots the following spring, there's nothing wrong with your soil - the problem is with the plants you're growing. They sound marginally hardy for your growing region and need to be protected over the winter months.

Here are some suggestions for hardy shrubs to plant in your landscape:
ARONIA (Chokecherry) - Black Night
BUDDLEIA (Butterfly Bush) - Black Knight, Nanho Blue, Pink Delight and Summer Rose
CORNUS (Dogwood) - Baileyi Redtwig and Bud's Yellowtwig
ELAEAGNUS (Russian Olive)
EUONYMUS - Dwarf Burning Bush
FORSYTHIA - Lynwood Gold
HAMAMELLIS (Witchhazel) - Virginiana
HIBISCUS (Rose of Sharon) - Aphrodite, Lucy and Minerva
HYDRANGEA - Annabelle, Nikko Blue and Pee Gee
LIGUSTRUM (Privet Hedge) - Amur River North
LINDERA (Spicebush)
LONICERA (Honeysuckle)- Honeyrose
PHILADELPHUS (Mockorange) - Blizzard and Natchez
PHYSOCARPOS (Ninebark) - Diabolo and Summer Wine
POTENTILLA - Gold Drop and McKay's White
PRUNUS - Flowering Almond glandulosa
SALIX (Willow) - Nishiki
SPIREA - Little Princess, Magic Carpet and Van Houtte
SYRINGA (Lilac) - meyeri Dwarf Korean, Miss Kim. Monge, Ludwig Spaeth, Common White and Charles Joly
WEIGELA - Red Prince and Wine & Roses

Plant now, in the spring, so the shrubs will have a chance to establish well before winter weather arrives.
