The plant commonly known as 'Jack and the Beanstalk' is Canavalia ensiformis. It is a vigorous vining plant that produces edible bean pods, if they're harvested young. The plant grows well in poor, dry soil, and thrives in rich, moist soil. It's not grown commercially in the US, but is grown in Brazil for the protein-rich beans it produces. There are some harmful properties in the beans, so they must be boiled twice, using fresh water each time. Hope this information helps.
