|Lilacs flower on new growth of the previous season. They spend the summer months developing new growth and flower buds for the next spring's floral display so pruning them back now will give them ample time to respond with new growth. If your lilac is very overgrown you can prune it back by about one third. This will encourage new growth all over the shrub and the potential for lots of flowers next spring. Enjoy your lilac!
