Grass doesn't grow well in the shade, as you have discovered. Once the tree is gone you should have no trouble growing a lush thick lawn. In shady areas, fescues seeem to grow better than other types of grasses, but full sunshine is best for all grass types. It might be that the soil is compacted, which makes turf struggle to grow. If so, you can rent a core aerator, run it over your lawn, leave the plugs to decompose and then spread a thin layer of compost over the grass. Water well, then overseed your entire lawn. The compost will work its way down into the holes left by the plugs and the new grass should sprout in 7-10 days. Best wishes with your lawn!
