starting seeds and getting mold on the soil. what do I need to add to my potting soil to prevent the mold

The fungus is called damping off when it attacks seedlings. I find that just training a fan on the seedlings will keep the air circulating and reduce the humidity enough to keep the fungus from attacking. Give this a try - just a small (6" fan) will move the air enough to preclude the problem. Best wishes with your seedlings.
