I bought a flowering pear last spring and it is doing great, but I am concerned about the bark. It is cracking and their are some rather large areas were it is completely void of bark 2 inches by 3 to 3and 1/2 inches is this normal? Should I be covering these areas? the tree is about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. thank you

Sounds like the bark may have been damaged during the winter. There are tree guards you can purchase to help prevent further damage. They essentially block the winter sunshine which will stop further cracking. Best wishes with your ornamental pear!
