we had snow damage. trunks split. now held together with screws and plastic ties. should i remove the ties or let the bark grow around them?

I'd leave the screws alone but remove the plastic ties before the bark grows over them. If you leave the ties in place they will girdle the tree as it grows and can eventually kill the tree. The screws should keep everything together long enough for the bark to callous over and mend the cracks. Best wishes with your maples.
