Stinky Compost - Knowledgebase Question

I tried making compost in an outdoor Trashcan, and during the winter it seemed to be doing good. I injured my shoulder just after the first of the year and couldn't get it turned very well. Now, it's planting time and I opened the can and PEEEYEEEWWWW! It stinks, and not nicely either! Can I use this?? I want to use it to amend soil in a plant bed that I want to put both veggies and flowers.

Without fresh air you turned your compost bin from aerobic to anarobic. The material will still decompose, it just won't smell very nice. You can use it - once fresh air dries it out a bit the odor will dissapate. Best wishes with your project.
