I just planted my flower bed about a week about with some hostas and I put some rubber mulch around them. I had been watering them but yesterday I noticed a lot of brown spiders as I was watering them. What are they coming from and what can I do to get rid of them?

The spiders may have come from the mulch (adults can lay eggs in the cool, dark crevices of rubber mulch). The spiders won't harm your plants and will disburse as they grow up. Spiders prey on garden insects so don't be in a hurry to chase them off. They will leave if the area remains too wet, so water your plants every few days to discourage them. The spiders will move on to drier quarters and then you can go back to your regular watering schedule.
