Last year we tilled up a new garden plot and fought the grass & weeds all summer until they just took over. How can we prepare this bed for planting this year so that we won't have so much grass & weeds? What can we spray on it to prepare for planting? I do use PREEN for my flowerbeds. Can I use that we well for the vegetable garden?
Thanks, Suzanne Cartmille

I don't think Preen is registered for use in vegetable gardens but you can check the label just to make sure. I would cover the garden bed with a landscape weed blocking fabric to ensure new weeds don't pop up in the garden. Anchor it down then cut slits or holes in the fabric to plant. The fabric will last about 5 years (good investment) and will keep the bed weed-free. By the time it's worn out, the weed seeds in the soil will have died and you'll have fewer weeds even when you remove the weed barrier fabric. Best wishes with your garden!
