You can use any organic matter as a mulch for your arborvitaes - compost, shredded leaves, even pine needles. The important thing is to keep the mulch material from piling up on the trunks or main stems of your plants. It can hold too much moisture and cause rot so keep it an inch or two away from the bases of the arborvitaes. Use an evergreen/conifer fertilizer such as an 8-8-8 and apply only once each year, in the spring, in amounts as recommended on the fertilizer package. Best wishes with your arborvitaes.
