Lack of sufficient sunlight or water stress can cause the symptoms you describe, as can poor soil condition. The more water, sunshine and fertilizer you provide, the larger the plants and the larger the fruits they can produce. Amending your soil with compost or other organic matter prior to planting your tomatoes will provide a rich, loose soil and allow your plants to grow extensive root systems. Couple the healthy roots with plenty of water and regular feeding and your plants will perform to their full potential. Enjoy your tomatoes!
