Digging a trench to lay the stones for your tree ring shouldn't cause too much stress to your tree. Just dig down, lay a few inches of gravel and then set your stones. Any problems the tree might encounter will be if you plan on filling the tree ring with soil so you can plant under the tree. Adding more than a few inches of soil can actually suffocate the roots of your tree. So if you simply plan to put in a tree ring to protect the tree from weed whacker and lawn mower damage, everything should be fine. If your original plan was to build a ring and fill it with soil so you can plant, I'd caution against it.
