If your lawn isn't thickening up, inspite of good care from you, it may be struggling with the soil or with too much thatch. When the soil becomes compacted, which happens over time with foot traffic, the roots have a hard time penetrating the soil and growing deeply. You can rent a core aerator and aerate the lawn, then spread a little sand or compost over the top and water it in. The sand or compost will work its way down into the holes left by the aerator and help loosen the soil. It will also help hold moisture which will encourage the roots to grow into them. You can also reseed the lawn when you spread the sand or compost and it will help thicken up the lawn. Thatch is a normal build up of dead stolons and roots. All lawns develop thatch but when it is an inch or more thick, it can keep water and fertilizer from reaching the roots of the grass. A power thatcher can remove the excess thatch. It really does a job of raking out both the old dead stolons and some of the healthy grass, as well, so you'll need to reseed after thatching. I'd wait until early fall to dethatch so the lawn will recover quickly. |
