Some lady bugs have no spots so you'll want to have them identified before you try to control them. Just scoop a few up and put them in a plastic baggie. Take them to your extension office or a well staffed nursery for help with identification. Ladybugs are quite beneficial in the garden. Other black and red bugs that are common at this time of year are boxelder bugs. They have an elongated body rather than a round body.
