I'm building raised vegetable gardens, and need a safe, non-chemical wood perservative. I'm using douglas fir.

Linseed oil is a natural preservative. It's extracted from flax seed, and is used, among other things, as a preservative for wood. The only downside is that it takes a long time to dry. If you plan for that, you'll be happy with its preservative qualities for your doug fir.
