There are both annual and perennial varieties of flax. The annuals reseed themselves in all zones. The perennials (best in zones 5-9), are short-lived and will reseed, or can be propagated by root division. Flax grows best in full sunshine, in ordinary garden soil. Though not considered invasive, flax can, and does reproduce without much encouragement. Seeds of Linum grandiflorum are available through Cyberseeds, P. O. Box 171102, San Antonio, TX 78217-1102.
