|I have an artichoke plant with over 30 chokes on. I picked and cooked 5 which were steamed for 1 1/2 hours. The leaves were very tough like chewing leather. The hearts were tasty. Did I pick too soon and what should I look for in order to harvest more?

|Artichokes should be harvested just as the bottom petals begin to spread, but while the rest of the bud is still fairly tight. You should be able to feel the artichoke 'give' a little when you squeeze it in your hand. This indicates the petals have begun to relax and separate. Hope this answers your question!
