What could be the problem with our Big Leaf Linden, Tilia Platyphylos, that last year down below the septic drain field was good, this year the leaf buds, with late spring, started but are now brown, mushy and only a few weak leaves emerging?

It sounds like a fungal disease, but it might also be due to excessive water or poor drainage near the root system. I'd clip off a few of the stems or small branches and take them to a Master Gardener Plant Clinic or to your local cooperative extension office for positive diagnosis. Contact info: WSU cooperative extension, 925 Plum Street Southeast, Olympia, WA 98501-1529 phone (360) 956-2000. Helpful folks there can identify the problem and suggest controls and solutions.
