According to Sunset's Western Garden Book, Mesquite is located in Zone 2 - "the Second-Coldest Western Climate". Your growing season is limited by cold winters, and lasts at most from mid-April to mid-October. But you say you want to do "two gardens per year," which leads me to believe you live in a warmer microclimate than Sunset's Zone 2. If you are in the lower elevations of the town of Mesquite, you may well be in Sunset Zone 10, the High Desert of the Southwest. Your growing season stretches from mid-March through mid-November. Your neighbors down in Las Vegas are in Sunset Zone 11, and due to their blistering summers, plant their main gardens in the fall. Only you can tell which zone you're really in. If your summers are too hot to support a garden, and you have an extended, warm fall, then do as the Las Vegans do. You may well fall inbetween these definitive zones, in which case, you may need to experiment to find out what planting schedule and plant material best suits your particular microclimate. You can get advice specific to your area by talking with Master Gardeners at your County Agricultural Extension Service at (702)222-3130 between 9 am and 12 pm (PST), weekdays.
